The show

rom the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents' book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim are widely regarded as among the best ever written. The world's greatest love story takes to the streets in this landmark Broadway musical that is one of the theatre's finest accomplishments.

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.

The original 1957 Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Robbins, marked Sondheim's Broadway debut. It ran for 732 performances before going on tour. The production was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 1958, winning two.The show had an even longer-running West End production, a number of revivals, and international productions. A 1961 musical film adaptation, co-directed by Robert Wise and Robbins, was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won ten, including Best Picture. A 2021 film adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, along with six additional nominations, winning one Oscar.

OUR SUMMER SCHOOL TIMELINE

Paymen will the be made via a payment plan.

  • In July 2023, we will hold a casting workshop, this is a great opportunity to meet others who are on the course and make friends ahead of the week as we know this can be a little bit daunting.

Throughout the day we will get to know everyone and have a play with lots of different things as well as giving you your script. In the afternoon we will then begin an audition process where you will have been asked to prepare a short audition song so we can see what you can do.

Our Zak Scott Productions team will then cast the show and let you know within 48 hours of the cast for the experience week.

  • The summer school experience will take place from Monday 19th August to Friday 30th August 2024. The days will be from 9AM - 6PM with a few breaks in-between. The experience will take place at The Performers Studios, Long Eaton and is very close by to all public networks should anyone need to use a train or bus to get to the week.

The summer school experience is ran by Zak and his life long friend Ellie, who both have extensive history with performing. Both are friendly and approachable and want the experience week to be as fun as possible. During the week other tutors may pop in to provide assistance. Everyone involved in the summer school experience are DBS Checked.

The experience week is aimed at young people aged 11-21 and we welcome everyone. Spaces are limited on the experience week so it is essential you book on early to avoid missing out.

The Summer School experience is £230 for the week and performances and this includes everything you will need from Scores, Costumes and a space to rehearse. The only thing we don’t include is lunch, so you will need to bring this with you. We even include a free t-shirt to wear throughout the week.

  • The performances are set to open to the public on Thursday 5th September 2024 as we officially open The Duchess Theatre’s 24/25 Season.

Students will be needed for the Wednesday evening whereby we will run a dress rehearsal.

During the week our technical team will be in the theatre getting everything ready to finish this unforgettable experience.
